With there being a week off between the Division I Preseason Coaches Poll  that was released last week and the Week #1 Rankings that will be released next week, we thought it would be fun to take a look at where things stand after opening weekend.  You can view the full results from the weekend’s games below.

Here are some of the highlights.  There were 9 Top 20 match-ups played…the higher seed won 5 of those match-ups and the lower seed won 4.

#1 North Carolina (0), #10 Michigan (1)
#2 Syracuse (4)
, #6 Maryland (1)
#3 Connecticut (4), #11 Stanford (1)
#4 Duke (4), #13 Liberty (0)
#5 Virginia (0), #18 Penn State (3)
#7 Wake Forest (2),
#10 Michigan (0)
#13 Liberty (2), #19 James Madison (3)
#16 Northwestern (1), #17 Boston U (2)
#18 Penn State (6)
, #20 Old Dominion (2)

  • #1 ranked North Carolina, despite dominating the game, were knocked off by #10 Michigan on a corner goal after time expired.
  • Earlier that same day, on the same field, non-ranked Iowa knocked off #7 Wake Forest 2-1, winning that opening match-up of the ACC/BIG Ten Challenge for the 6th year in a row.
  • The defending National Champions, #2 Syracuse, outscored opponents 12-1 in their opening weekend, including a convincing 4-1 victory over #6 Maryland.
  • #18 Penn State upended two Top 20 opponents handily in their opening weekend, with a 6-2 victory over #20 Old Dominion and a 3-0 victory over #5 Virginia.
